Four ways I engage

Most relationships begin with the execution review. It is the cheapest way to find out whether there is a problem worth my involvement.

Start from the situation

Which one fits yours?

Choose the sentence closest to where you are. The engagement that usually addresses it is highlighted.

Your situation

How it unfolds

From first call to a defined close

The same four stages for every engagement. You always know which one we are in, and what ends it.

  1. Week 0

    Conversation

Thirty minutes, no charge. Whether there is a structural problem, and whether I am the right person for it.

  2. Week 1

    Scope in writing

Who the client is, what is examined, what is delivered, the fee, and the date it ends. A mutual NDA from here.

  3. Weeks 2–6

    The work

Interviews, documents, observation. Findings shared with the client as they form — never saved for a reveal.

  4. Close

    Handover

A written account, presented in person, with named owners for every change. Then the engagement ends.

Usually a good fit

  • A strategy approved, and a result that has not followed
  • A decision the board has deferred more than twice
  • A new chief executive who wants to understand before acting
  • A chair who suspects the board is managing, not governing

Usually not

  • Operational fixes — process, throughput, systems
  • Writing the strategy itself from a blank page
  • Executive coaching on personal effectiveness
  • Work that needs a team of analysts on site

Fees & FAQ

The questions asked before the first call

How are fees set?

Fixed-fee engagements are quoted after the first conversation, once the scope is clear. Retained work is a monthly fee for a defined term. I do not charge by the hour, and I do not quote before I understand the problem.

Who is the client — the CEO or the board?

Whoever commissions the work, and that is agreed in writing before it starts. When the CEO engages me and the problem turns out to sit with the board, I raise it with the CEO first and agree together how it reaches the chair.

How is confidentiality handled?

Every engagement is under a mutual non-disclosure agreement from the first substantive conversation. Interview material is unattributed. Case studies on this site are shared with permission and with identifying detail removed.

Do you work outside the US and UK?

Yes. Most engagements are in North America and Europe; about a third involve boards meeting in more than one country. Travel is billed at cost.

What if you are not the right fit?

Then I will tell you in the first call, and where I can, suggest someone who is. I decline roughly half of the enquiries I receive — usually because the problem is operational rather than structural.

How quickly can an engagement start?

Usually within four to eight weeks of agreeing scope. A Strategy Execution Review can occasionally begin sooner if the calendar allows; the availability note on the home page is kept current.

Enquiries

Not sure which fits? That is what the call is for.

Describe the symptom. I will tell you which engagement addresses it — or that none of them do.
